Weippe Discovery Center

Weippe, Idaho

CKA designed and coordinated the renovation of a former two story church into the new mixed use facility for the small community of Weippe, Idaho. We transformed a rectangle box into an attractive, highly functional facility.

Weippe's claim to fame is being the location where the Lewis and Clark Expedition first encountered Native Americans after their torturous journey across the Bitterroot Mountains along the Lolo Trail. The Discovery Center celebrates this event with a series of murals painted on the building's four sides, protected by a new wrap-around deck.

The new covered deck and entries were constructed with exposed log columns and wood framing in log cabin syle detailing. The two story interior is the new home of the community library as well as a community meeting room, coumputer room and outreach offices for Lewis Clark State College.

The project was funded by numerous grant sources, community donated labor and donated materials from a number of sources...over a three year period. The completed project is a great example of what can be accomplished by a small community if a project's vision is established and a committed group of volunteers follow through from start to finish.
